The current war between the MCU and the DCEU almost perfectly reverses Marvel and DC's '90s animation battle. The MCU's domination of the box office is the well-documented result of Marvel nailing their formula for an extensive, interconnected narrative that spans an ever-increasing number of stories over numerous movies and TV shows. Marvel's formula for success hasn't proved so fruitful for their direct rivals DC, however, whose franchise, the DCEU, has struggled considerably in comparison.
The DCEU's worst problem is often cited as its needlessly gritty and occasionally bleak tone, and though Warner Bros. is now attempting to fix this, it has already hurt the franchise's success. The MCU, on the other hand, has simply moved from strength to strength, firmly establishing a massive and loyal audience. However, both companies boast their own iconic heroes, most of which predate Marvel and DC's respective movie franchises by several decades.

Batman: The Animated Series was a sympathetic and loyal take on the Dark Knight and is still regarded today as one of the best iterations of the character on-screen.
