Despite being steeped in Forgotten Realms lore, endeavors to make itself approachable for new players. It goes to great lengths to provide concise lore drops and explanations for characters connected to past events, like the fall of Netheril and Sarevok's conquest of Baldur's Gate. One event in particular warrants plenty of explanation, that beingthe fall of Elturel into Avernus, something that actually happened during an established module before takes place.
is a 2019 campaign book that follows the city of Elturel and its inhabitants as they are dragged into the hells by the archdevil, Zariel. Generally, does a good job of showing how these events affected the world, specifically in their relation to the tiefling refugees found throughout the game that hail from the city. But one character, Zevlor, is tied to a specific group from that never fully gets explained in the video game: the Hellriders.
Essentially, 's Hellriders were once elite warriors who fought for Elturel before the city fell into hell. As their name would suggest, they mainly fought on horseback, and helped to defend the city from early threats. Many of them were clerics and paladins, taking oaths in service of their people. The position was highly respected, and importantly,the Hellriders were supposed to serve for life.
The Tiefling Prince Zevlor is someone you can find and rescue in Baldur's Gate 3 once you reach the Mind Flayer Colony area near the end of Act 2.
Zevlor was once a Hellrider himself, though he now seems to reject the title. It seems that a couple of the Tiefling refugees once numbered among their ranks, including Tilses and possibly Cerys. They are the most formidable warriors among the refugees, even without mounts to ride into battle, and they carry weapons and armor that bear special Hellrider enchantments. Though he no longer wishes to be called a Hellrider, Zevlor still cares deeply about his people and puts his strength into keeping them safe as they journey to Baldur's
