Get ready to see more AI-powered features on YouTube videos.
Google-owned YouTube is preparing to tap “generative AI” programs like OpenAI’s DALL-E 2, which can create professional-looking images from text provided by users. YouTube will allow creators to tap into the technologies to add special effects to their videos.
“The power of AI is just beginning to emerge in ways that will reinvent video and make the seemingly impossible possible,” YouTube’s new CEO, Neal Mohan, wrote in a letter(Opens in a new window) to creators.
The features promise to raise production values on YouTube videos by letting a creator "virtually swap" outfits during the video or add "fantastical film settings" in the background, with more functions to come, he added.
Mohan merely teased the possibilities, but the big question is how far YouTube will go in embracing AI-powered video editing features, which also have scary capabilities. The power of generative AI for video can already be seen in “deepfakes,” which can help you impersonate someone else using real-time face-swapping technology.
In addition, Google itself has created an AI-powered program that can generate life-like, but ultimately fictitious videos based on a mere text prompt. The same technology could be easily used to churn out deepfakes and online disinformation.
But it looks like YouTube is well aware of the safety concerns with AI-powered video features. In his letter, Mohan said: “We’re taking the time to develop these features with thoughtful guardrails. Stay tuned in the coming months as we roll out tools for creators as well as the protections to embrace this technology responsibly.”
