Sean Astin has been cast as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s childhood enemy in Young Rock season 2.The hit sitcom stars Johnson playing his future self, a candidate in the 2032 presidential election. The episodes of Young Rockspan several different time periods: Johnson as a ten-year-old, a high school student, and a college student, with three different actors portraying him at each age. The show is created by Nahnatchka Khan, creator of Fresh Off the Boat and director of Always Be My Maybe.
Season 1, which finished airing in May 2021, explored stories about Johnson’s origins in his wrestling career, his teenage rebellions, and his time playing football at the University of Miami. The next season is set to expand the arcs introduced in the first season while introducing new characters and plots that led Johnson to transform into “The Rock.” In addition to Johnson, the show stars Uli Latukefu as college-aged Johnson as well as Adrian Groulx and Bradley Constant as ten-year-old and fifteen-year-old Johnson. Several new characters and cast members who will be appearing in season 2 have already been announced, including Johnson’s college sweetheart Dany Garcia, played by Arlyn Broche.

According to Variety, season 2 will be introducing viewers to a new character portrayed by Sean Astin. Astin’s character, named Dr. Julian Echo, is Johnson’s childhood nemesis who resurfaces in his life as an adult to try to sabotage Johnson’s presidential campaign. Dr. Echo, who works as a chiropractor, appears in the show just two weeks before election day and accuses the presidential candidate of having once tried to to kill him.
