The announcement of a Pac-Man World remake is good news even for those who aren't fans of the classic Pac-Man arcade game. The original platformer managed to give the gaming icon new life in the late 90s, and a remake for the Switch was announced in a Nintendo Direct. Although Pac-Man is best known for the arcade original, his platforming debut is well worth playing.
Originally made for the PlayStation console, Pac-Man World told the story of Pac-Man making a journey to Ghost Island in order to save his kidnapped family and friends. Along the way, he traverses six themed worlds, each ending with a boss battle. In the end, Pac-Man reaches the heart of Ghost Island and faces off with the villainous Toc-Man. Pac-Man came to the Switch before in the Pac-Man 99 battle royale game, but Pac-Man World is an entirely different experience. Pac-Man World was a success among fans and critics, and proved that Pac-Man still had relevance in gaming.

Pac-Man World introduces Pac-Man to the platforming genre, and it does so successfully. The game's controls are easy to learn and understand, and also features a couple of unique mechanics in the Rev Roll and Pac-Dot Toss that are well-incorporated into the levels, especially the former. Each of the worlds provides significantly different level layouts, and they never feel like simple reskins of each other. For example, the Carnival levels feel like they test players in a completely different way than the Pirate levels. This is in addition to individual levels featuring their own gimmicks. Super Mario 64's 16 unique worlds are a fair comparison to Pac-Man World's zones, with no two feeling alike.
