Melanie Lynskey, star of the showYellowjackets, opens up on why she thinks the series has become so popular. With Yellowjackets season 1 just having ended, the show proved to be a success right from the start and was given the green light for season 2 in December. Yellowjackets tells the story of a high school girls soccer team in 1996 that, while on the way to a national championship tournament, gets in a plane crash and winds up lost in the Canadian wilderness. Their traumatic story is told via flashbacks in tandem with the modern-day story of four of the survivors as adults. One of those survivors, Shauna, is portrayed by Lynskey. Her co-stars include Tawny Cypress, Juliette Lewis, and Christina Ricci.
Lynskey has been working in Hollywood for many years now, but mainly in independent cinema and hasn’t seen much mainstream attention until now. Originally from New Zealand, Lynskey was picked out of high school by Peter Jackson for his filmHeavenly Creatures in which she starred alongside a then-unknown Kate Winslett. Despite receiving critical acclaim for her role, more work did not come as easily for Lynskey as it did for her co-star and she took smaller roles in a mixture of big-budget and indie films over the years. This included Ever After, Coyote Ugly, and Flags of Our Fathers. She has since become a stalwart of the independent scene, with stand-out roles in films such as I Don’t Feel at Home in this World Anymore. It now seems the tide has turned, however, and Lynskey has been nominated for a Critics Choice Award and praised for her role in Yellowjackets.
