Idol: Haley Slaton Reveals She Married Contestant Before Son’s Birth
American Idol season 20 contestant Haley Slaton revealed that she married a fellow contestant before her son's birth. Haley, who was five and a half months pregnant at her audition, is a 23-year-old temp agency worker from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She shared that she grew up in church singing, and that she has been singing since she was 3 years old. Haley brought her mother to the audition. Haley explained that her mother was a single mom of three children who was pursuing a college degree while working a full-time job, and she never gave up. Haley said that she inspires her to be a good mother.
Haley said that being a contestant on American Idol while pregnant was not going to be an obstacle for her, and that it was something that she always wanted to do. She said, «just being a mom shouldn't stop you from following your dreams.» She went on to say, «I just really want to do this for my son, and give him a really good life. And I really want to show him to never stop chasing his dreams in the future.» Haley began her audition by singing «The Climb» by Miley Cyrus. The judges, Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan were intrigued, but they were unsure and asked her to sing another song. Haley then sang «One and Only» by Adele. Katy was concerned about Haley entering the competition pregnant because it was so much pressure, but she received a vote of yes from all three judges, and earned her golden ticket to Hollywood.
