For over twenty years, Microsoft has provided its Xbox gamers with access to online multiplayer via Xbox Live, which has shifted and grown over the past two decades to include monthly free titles and cross-platform play across PC, Switch and mobile devices.
Even after rebranding the online platform to Xbox network in 2021, the Xbox Live Gold tier has continued to survive as the cheapest option for Xbox players that simply wanted access to online multiplayer. Starting on September 14, Microsoft will be introducing Xbox Game Pass Core as its new basic tier subscription option for the same current price of Xbox Live Gold, $10 a month or $60 for a year. In addition to online multiplayer and exclusive member deals, the updated tier will also grant access to over 25 games from the Xbox Game Pass library, with new titles being added two to three times a year. To start, the publisher has provided a list of 19 titles that will be available on the first day of the subscription service, with more to be revealed closer to launch.
Unsurprisingly, the list of games so far is almost fully composed of first-party Xbox games, with the exception of Among Us, Descenders, Human Fall Flat and Inside. As for current Xbox Live Gold members, their subscription will automatically transfer to Xbox Game Pass Core on September 14 with no input necessary. The monthly Games with Gold offer will come to an end on September 1, and players can continue to use any Xbox One games they previously added to their library via the service as long as they are subscribed to Game Pass Core or Ultimate. In addition, any Xbox 360 games redeemed via Games with Gold will remain playable regardless of your subscription status.
