The X-Men and the whole mutant race are in their greatest age after founding the nation of Krakoa brought unprecedented unity and prosperity. However, despite their claims of peaceful coexistence, the mutants cannot help antagonizing powerful human institutions. The latest issue of X-Men proves this will inevitably lead to a bleak future where the two species are locked in a disastrous conflict.
Since the iconic Days of Future Past storyline, which ran in The Uncanny X-Men vol. 1 issues #141–142 (by Chris Claremont and John Byrne), hypothetical dark futures have become a recurring feature in X-Men stories. Another famous example is the Age of Apocalypse, an alternate timeline where mutants become the dominant race but still can't avoid turning the world into a nightmare. The common theme in these futures is that mutants and humans cannot find a way to peacefully coexist, which leads to a conflict that is destructive for one side or for both. The current «age of Krakoa» has brought prosperity to mutants, but at the same time it has isolated them from the rest of the planet more than ever. Despite being recognized by the United Nations, Krakoa sits in a very delicate and dangerous position, as a powerful and united mutant race can easily be identified as a threat.
