New footage for Wonka shown exclusively at CinemaCon by Warner Bros. contains throwbacks to the original 1971 film. Author Roald Dahl first introduced the world to the characters of Charlie Bucket and Willy Wonka in his beloved 1964 children's novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Seven years later, Gene Wilder starred as the eccentric chocolatier in Mel Stuart's musical film adaptation Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and brought a whole new dimension to the colorful character. More recently, Dahl's original story was re-told through Tim Burton's 2005 directorial vision that adopted the name of the original book, and starred Johnny Depp as a much paler, more animated version of Willy Wonka.
The Willy Wonka baton was officially passed off to Paddington director Paul Kingin 2021. King will helm and co-write a script alongside comedian Simon Farnaby, telling the origin story of Willy Wonka in the aptly named Wonka. The same year Timothée Chalamet was cast in the titular role, and revealed that he would be making his on-screen singing debut in the film's several musical numbers. Rounding out the star-studded cast are Olivia Colman, Sally Hawkins, Jim Carter, and comedians Keegan-Michael Key and Rowan Atkinson. Details about the film's plot have largely been kept under wraps other than the basic premise that it would serve as a prequel to the 1964 novel and detail Wonka's ascent to the factory owner audiences have come to know.
