Choices matter in Legends of Awen: Rise of the Fianna, and its developers want players to have more of them. Tapping into Celtic mythology, the new CRPG is the debut title of Hawkswell, a 2021 French studio claiming to tap into 15-20 years of game dev veteran experience.
The upcoming game stars an orphan child named Finn, who is recruited with his magical powers into the fierce order of the Fianna warriors, taking on human and supernatural foes.
“Players will lead their Fianna warband through tactical battles, manage relationships with five unique Companions, and unlock the power of legendary weapons tied to ancient heroes,” a press release explains.
Rise of the Fianna takes a choice-based approach, letting players not only fight their way through strategic turn-based combat, but also with personality-based techniques such as negotiation, charm, or intimidation. Rise of the Fianna promises replayability, too, as choices do matter along the way for character and narrative progression.
While the game does seem like it’s got a lot going on its own, an upcoming crowdfunding campaign by Hawkswell is planned in order to “expand the planned number of player choices and the depth and impact of their consequences from their original scope.”
The trailer showcased at the PC Gaming Most Wanted Show mixes pre-alpha in-engine footage as well as in-game cutscenes to showcase the game’s aesthetic and graphics. There’s no exact date for the game itself, but the crowdfunding campaign is aiming for a Q1 2025 launch.
