Though it faltered quite a bit at the box office, arguably one of the buzziest movies of last fall was The Last Duel, Ridley Scott's latest historical epic. The medieval-set film arrived in theaters in October, earning positive reviews for its impressive production design and cast. Unfortunately, The Last Duel didn't make waves money-wise, earning only $30 million worldwide on a hefty budget. Now that the film is available on HBO Max, though, it can reach a wider audience.
The Last Duel tracks the real life events that led up to France's final legal duel between Sir Jean de Carrouges (Matt Damon) and Jacques Le Gris (Adam Driver) after the latter is accused of raping Marguerite de Carrouges (Comer), Jean's wife. To fully capture each side of the story, The Last Duel's script unfolds in three chapters, each one told from the perspective of one of the characters at the center of the conflict. Damon and Ben Affleck wrote Jean and Le Gris' perspectives, while Nicole Holofcener wrote Marguerite's.

In a recent interview with EW, Comer discussed The Last Duel's multi-perspective story and shared her reaction to it. For Comer, it was very important that the audience knew Marguerite's story was the truth, so the different perspectives felt like "a dangerous way to tell a story." However, she then went on to say that the structure fit quite well for the story, even if it brought that flash of danger. Comer said:
