Despite the huge success of the Sonic The Hedgehog movies, Sonic The Hedgehog 3 faces a major origins problem as they decide where the series heads next. Sonic 2proved to be a hit in the United States, as it broke records to become the highest ever grossing video-game movie. With the introduction of popular faces Tails and Knuckles, the fan service in the sequel was done to perfection. However, the Sonic The Hedgehog universe is expanding ever further and with so much content to choose from, it will be a tough task for Paramount to decide what they want to include.
At the end of Sonic 2, Sonic used the Master Emerald to become Super Sonic and defeat Jim Carrey's Dr. Robotnik. This final battle scene saw Knuckles and Tails team up with him reminiscent of the video game Sonic Heroes. With many wondering where the third movie will take Sonic and his friends, the post-credit scene revealed the path that would be taken. When cleaning up the damage that Robotnik had caused, the military revealed that they had discovered 'Project Shadow'. The audience is then given their first glimpse of the ultimate life form, Shadow the Hedgehog.

The issue with Sonic 3 is that they have a lot of content to pluck from, including comics, games and various different worlds. Making the choice of how and where they want to take the franchise is going to be extremely difficult for Sega as the Sonic universe is really beginning to expand now. The first two movies were relatively simplistic in terms of Sonic lore. The three main characters were introduced and the threat was on more of a city-level than a global scale.
