Fans probably shouldn’t expect a Sonic The Hedgehog game set in the recent live-action film universe, nor any characters from the movies appearing in Sonic Frontiers. Despite initial backlash surrounding Sonic’s design, the first Sonic The Hedgehog movie was a surprise success in 2020, and its sequel quickly became the highest-grossing video game-based film in US history when it hit theaters earlier this year. Several of the new characters introduced in the budding Sonic cinematic universe have been added to mobile games like Sonic Dash and Sonic Forces: Speed Battle, including Sonic’s wise mentor Longclaw and the Sonic The Hedgehog 2 versions of Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles.
Sonic Team director Morio Kishimoto, who will helm the upcoming Sonic Frontiers, recently spoke about how the recent live-action Sonic movies influenced the Blue Blur’s latest gaming adventure. Kishimoto noted that this was especially apparent in Sonic Frontiers’ combat, which will feature more dynamic fighting styles that will have Sonic punch, kick, and form devastating whirlwinds around his enemies in addition to his traditional spin attacks. However, while Sonic’s recent big-screen success might have helped shape his newest video game, players won’t be getting a crossover or direct game adaptation of the Sonic movies anytime soon.
