Paramount CEO Brian Robbins has opened up about the connection between Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and the Knuckles spin-off TV show. Paramount Pictures' Sonic movie series is based on the popular Sega video game franchise of the same name. In the movies, Ben Schwartz voices the lead character, with Jim Carrey, Colleen O'Shaughnessey, and James Marsden appearing in key roles as Dr. Robotnik, Tails, and Tom. The first Sonic movie came out in 2020, becoming a massive success at the box office. A sequel was subsequently released in March 2022, which topped the revenue of the first movie, becoming the U.S.'s highest-grossing video game film. A third film is currently in development, in addition to a TV spinoff centered on Knuckles the Echidna, voiced by Idris Elba in Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
The Knuckles TV show was announced by Sega and Paramount Pictures in February 2022 ahead of Sonic 2's premiere. The show is reportedly a miniseries that will see Elba reprise his role as the titular short-beaked red Echidna, who is Sonic's former rival and now a close friend. Currently, plot details are slim on the spinoff, as the show is in the very early stages of development. But per Sonic and Sonic 2 director Jeff Fowler, there are many different story ideas for Knuckles' show on the table, so whichever direction the show decides to head towards, it is likely to be equally exciting and enthralling for fans.
