Jim Carrey revealed that he intends to retire from acting after Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which might just spell doom for the third film in the successful video game movie franchise. Across all the media over the years, a massive part of Sonic's identity is tied to Eggman. For the trilogy to conclude without Jim Carrey's interpretation of the character would be more than disappointing. It'd be a disaster in numerous ways.
Dr. Robotnik, also known as Eggman, is a major fixture of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. He's the Blue Blur's arch-nemesis and most recurring enemy. He's vexed Sonic and his friends since the very first game in 1991 and has generally been the most consistent enemy across the games, comics, and cartoons. His popularity is unmistakable as well. There are very few games in which he doesn't rear his head, even if he isn't the primary antagonist, such as the case of Sonic Heroes or Sonic and the Secret Rings.

Losing Jim Carrey would be a major downgrade for the Sonic the Hedgehog movies, both because of Carrey's portrayal and because of what the character himself brings to the series. Following the almost too perfect casting of Carrey's Eggman in Sonic the Hedgehog would be a herculean task. What's more, Eggman is instrumental in ensuring that the set-up Sonic Adventure 2 storyline works properly. If Sonic Adventure 2 is indeed the plot being primarily pulled from, then Eggman not being in the sequel would doom the character to missing out on the best developments his character's ever had in the games.
