The Disney+ shows are supposed to be the future of Star Wars for the next couple of years, and yet Obi-Wan Kenobi looks very cheap. More than three years since the last Star Wars theatrical release, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the franchise is still in process of figuring out how to continue past the Skywalker Saga and has been struggling to find its identity on the small screen. Beyond this ongoing issue, though, there is another problem regarding the Star Wars shows, particularly the highly anticipated Obi-Wan Kenobi, that is hard to ignore.
Four episodes in, Obi-Wan Kenobi is far from matching the visual quality of a Star Wars movie in terms of its sets, special effects, and more. The costumes and makeup of the Grand Inquisitor and Fifth Brother, for example, have them looking more like regular humans in homemade dress-up uniforms than the freighting and elegant alien looks of Star Wars Rebels. And the CGI in many scenes, such as when the ships are firing at Reva in episode 4, Obi-Wan Kenobi is constantly reminding viewers that this is a TV show, with the sort of budget constraints that a Star Wars theatrical movie does not have to deal with. This is frustrating considering that the Disney+ Star Wars shows were expected to be an extension of the franchise's moviegoing experience.
