Newly-released puzzle platformer System of Souls looks to recreate Portalwith an edgy attitude, new mechanics and a distinct lack of cake. Valve's iconic first-person puzzle series lets players create doorways through space in order to manipulate physics and traverse Aperture Science. While the series' writer wants Valve to make Portal 3 for fans, System of Souls seems to be a spiritual successor to the iconic series.
2007's Portal introduced players to the Portal Gun, a sci-fi tool created by Aperture Science capable of opening doors through space. The classic Valve title sees players use the Portal Gun to complete a series of tests for the aggressive artificial intelligence GLaDOS, but players are eventually able to escape the tests and defeat her. A 2011 sequel, Portal 2, put even more emphasis on clever writing while also introducing brand-new puzzle mechanics like tractor beams, lasers and gels of various properties. While Valve appears to have no plans for a Portal 3, a recent Unreal Engine 5 remake of Portal demonstrates the potential of a modern-day successor.

A launch trailer for System of Souls, posted to YouTube by PlayStation, reveals a first-person puzzle game reminiscent of Portal but without the humor. Developed by Gammera Nest SL, the indie title will take players to the year 2155 where human souls are placed into robotic bodies to survive in a rapidly-declining environment. The game's protagonist, L-064N, will explore the ION facility while solving puzzles and contending with an overdeveloped AI named Aura.
