Marvel’s What If…? episode 1 introduced the character of Captain Carter, a super-soldier version of Peggy from the first Captain America film, and she's set to make another appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Unlike Steve Rogers, however, Captain Carter doesn’t wear a mask as part of her costume. Her introduction in the episode “What If… Captain Carter Were The First Avenger,” is full of Easter eggs, references, and twists to the original storyline. But why doesn’t Captain Carter wear a mask in What If...? like Captain America normally does in the MCU?
The reappearance of Captain Carter's shield in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is significant mainly because of what it implies for the rest of the divergent storylines in What If...?. Although the animated series is based on the premise of a multiverse that includes the main MCU, it lacks a strong canonical connection to the live-action content and instead feels like a totally separate entity. But Captain Carter could be just the first of many What If...? variants to find their way into the live-action canon. This is especially likely given how central the multiverse is to the conflict of the Doctor Strange sequel.
