All Might is one of the most iconic heroes in My Hero Academia, but he was almost very different than he is in the manga. Every manga in Shonen Jump has at least one editor assigned to it who gives feedback on the story and makes sure the mangaka meets their deadlines. And the editors for My Hero Academia had some major complaints about All Might’s design.
My Hero Academia is a popular manga by Kohei Horikoshi that is currently being serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump. It takes place in a world where superpowers are commonplace and follows the high schooler Izuku Midoriya as he trains to become a professional hero. The series has been running for almost 8 years now, and a large part of its longevity is due to its vast cast of iconic characters. One of the most iconic of these characters is All Might, who is the top professional hero at the start of the series. While due to an injury he is usually gaunt and sickly, when he uses his powers he transforms into a large muscular man with a broad smile. He uses this form and grin to reassure those in danger that everything is fine while he is on the scene. However, his design didn’t initially reassure My Hero Academia’s editors when Horikoshi first revealed it.

In the extra pages for the first volume of the manga, Horikoshi revealed that he was the only one that liked All Might’s design when he first created the character. The Shonen Jump editorial department apparently thought that he looked too old and worried that no one would look up to someone like him.
