Brent Spiner will be reunited with his Star Trek: The Next Generation colleagues in Star Trek: Picard season 3, but the details of his role are a closely guarded secret. Spiner played Data in seven seasons of TNG and four movies before reprising the role in Picard season 1. Due to the fact that Data is an ageless android, Spiner had a handful of scenes as Data and played Altan Soong, the human son of Data's creator Noonian Soong. He returned to play the villainous Adam Soong in Picard season 2, and executive producer Alex Kurtzmann confirmed at Comic-Con 2022 that he would be returning for Star Trek: Picard season 3's TNG reunion.
It was revealed that Brent Spiner would be playing an "old new character" in Picard season 3 alongside the returning TNG cast. Rather than nail down exactly who Spiner would be playing, it asks even more questions. Over the years, Brent Spiner has — with the exception of Fionnula Flanagan as Juliana Tainer and Isa Briones as Kore Soong — single-handedly portrayed each branch of the Soong family tree. As well as Data in TNG, he portrayed Data's evil brother Lore and their creator Noonian Soong. He played Soong's geneticist ancestor Arik Soong in Star Trek: Enterprise season 4. Which of these old characters will be given a new spin will lead to feverish fan speculation in the run-up to Picard season 3.
