The Gorn are expected to return in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, which can break a franchise tradition by showing the reptilian aliens are not part of a monoculture. The Gorn were reintroduced in Strange New Worlds and made an immediate impact as grave threats to the United Federation of Planets. Cleverly, Strange New Worlds deepened its connection to the Gorn by making Lt. La'an Noonien Singh (Christina Chong) one of the rare humans who survived being captured by the Gorn as a child. La'an's personal history and expertise with the Gorn became invaluable when Captain Christopher Pike's (Anson Mount) Starship Enterprise battled the Gorn inStrange New Worlds episode 4, «Memento Mori.»
The Gorn debuted in the Star Trek: The Original Series episode, «Arena,» and were established as savage, humanoid reptiles who nonetheless were capable of speech and cunning tactics. Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) faced and defeated a Gorn on Cestus III, and it was their sole canonical appearance untilStar Trek: Enterprise season 4, which showed a Gorn that was reimagined with CGI. Star Trek: Lower Decks showed a Gorn wedding, but Strange New Worlds further reimagined the Gorn and turned the reptiles into a terrifying and cannibalistic adversary. Yet each time the Gorn is depicted, they are different, and it's hard to reconcile how they are all the same species. But this is because Star Trek often gets mired in the idea that its aliens live in monocultures, so that all Vulcans, Romulans, Klingons, Cardassians, Bajorans, etc. are the same.
