In Star Trek: Lower Decks season 3, the USS Cerritos visits Star Trek: Deep Space Nine — could this hint at the long-awaited return of Captain Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks)? Returning to Paramount+ with new episodes on August 25th, Lower Decks unveiled its full season 3 trailer at San Diego Comic-Con, and the highlight was undoubtedly the sight of the Cerritos arriving at Deep Space Nine. At the Star Trek Universe Hall H panel,Lower Decks' creator Mike McMahan teased that the crew of the Cerritos enters DS9 and runs into «familiar faces» — but could that include the long-missing Captain Sisko?
In the series finale of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Captain Sisko became one with the Prophets and transcended into a being of non-linear time. The Prophets are the gods worshipped on the planet Bajor who reside in the Wormhole to the Gamma Quadrant. Although Starfleet doesn't officially recognize the Prophets as gods and classifies them as «wormhole aliens,» Sisko became their Emissary when he assumed his post as commander of Deep Space Nine. It was later revealed in DS9 season 7 that Ben was actually half-Prophet and his mother, Sarah (Deborah Lacey), was a Prophet who came to Earth and fell in love with his father, Joseph Sisko (Brock Peters). When Captain Sisko ascended into another plane of existence, he promised that he would be back. In the 23 years since DS9's 1999 cancelation, Star Trek has entered a new golden age on Paramount+ with series like Star Trek: Picard and Star Trek: Prodigy bringing back icons like Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew). Meanwhile, DS9 fans have lamented the lack of a Captain Sisko comeback.
