Where HIMYM Characters Are During How I Met Your Father

How I Met Your Father takes place between How I Met Your Mother’s present and future timelines, but the original show has given indications of where the characters are in the spinoff. While not a direct sequel series, How I Met Your Father takes place in the same universe as HIMYM. Set in 2022, How I Met Your Father picks up nine years after the present timeline of How I Met Your Mother, which technically ends in May 2013 after Barney and Robin’s wedding — even though the finale episode aired in 2014. As for the future narration, there won’t be much overlap considering Future Ted’s story takes place in 2030 and HIMYF's Future Sophie narrates her tale in 2050.

While the finale of How I Met Your Mother also wrapped up the characters’ stories in 2013 upon Ted finally meeting Tracy, the episode also has glimpses into the characters’ futures. HIMYM’s finale features several flashforwards that indicate the big moments of the characters’ lives between 2013, the present timeline’s end, and 2030 when Ted narrates the story and finally gets back together with Robin. When taking into account the major events afterHIMYM’s finale that Future Ted gives, it’s much easier to estimate where Ted Mosby, Robin Scherbatsky, Lily Aldrin, Marshall Eriksen, and Barney Stinson are during the Hulu series’ first season in 2022 — and especially whether HIMYM’s characters could cameo on How I Met Your Father.
