In How I Met Your Father episode 1, the new show has made a big narrator change that helps to explain the relationships in the stories better than How I Met Your Mother did. While How I Met Your Father includes a whole new cast, it is still cemented as part of the same franchise as its predecessor. Even within episode 1, the show references How I Met Your Mother and reuses a major set-piece, but the show is not afraid to make some big changes.
InHow I Met Your Mother, the older Ted Mosby (Bob Saget) is telling his two kids about how he met their mother in the year 2030. This framing device stretches the whole 9 seasons of the original show, despite the mother not appearing until the end of How I Met Your Mother season 8. In How I Met Your Father, the older Sophie (Kim Cattrall) is seen telling her son the story of how she met his father, and the end of episode 1 makes it clear that one of four men introduced already will be the father.

Throughout the 9-season run of How I Met Your Mother it became increasingly strange to many viewers that the older Ted was as open about some things with his teenage kids as he was. While he attempted to conceal the fact that he and his friends were doing drugs (“sandwiches”), he repeatedly goes into detail about the many sexual relationships that he had with random women before he met their mother, going as far as to hint about the time he had a threesome.
