WARNING: Spoilers ahead for HIMYF episode 5!
As How I Met Your Father paints a better picture of its characters, the spinoff is continuing the repeated subplot of How I Met Your Mother’s parent problems. While How I Met Your Father was set up to repeat the main storytelling device of its predecessor, the show has already reused several other character dynamics and storylines. From Drew becoming the new Victoria, to Jesse and Ellen repeating Barney and James’ sibling confusion, introducing new Barney-like catchphrases, and now continuing parental strife, How I Met Your Father is putting a spin on HIMYM’s notable qualities.
In How I Met Your Father episode 5, Sophie (Hilary Duff) is preparing for a game night with Drew’s friends until her unstable mother shows up unexpectedly. How I Met Your Father episode 1 already revealed that Sophie’s past was troubled, with her dad completely out of the picture while her party-girl mom bounced from boyfriend to boyfriend as Sophie cleaned up the pieces. When Sophie’s mom Lori (Paget Brewster) arrives to introduce her daughter to her new 27-year-old musician boyfriend Ash, Sophie reverts back to her old habits, which, as Valentina puts it, is like a bad version of Gilmore Girls. Valentina helps Sophie see that maybe her mom is the issue in her relationships rather than the guys, leading the rest of How I Met Your Father’s characters to reflect on their own parental complexes.
