In How I Met Your Father episode 7, the spinoff TV series name drops Lin-Manuel Miranda, but this creates a continuity issue for the original How I Met Your Mother. The How I Met Your Mother TV series liked to place itself in time by namedropping important events and celebrities that were contemporary to the story. How I Met Your Father is boldly continuing this tradition, but its latest swing might have caused the show problems.
In How I Met Your Father episode 7, “Rivka Rebel,” Sophie (Hilary Duff) gets an opportunity as an event photographer for a celebrity-filled Bat Mitzvah for Rivka, an social media influencer and daughter of Naomi, the owner of a prestigious gallery. Naomi asks Sophie to get photos of all the important moments of the evening. However, her view of important focuses less on Rivka and more on capturing her alongside celebrities and titans of industry. Specifically namedropped celebrities include Lin-Manuel Miranda, Billy Porter, and Anderson Cooper.

While most of these names only come up in How I Met Your Father episode 7 once, Lin-Manuel Miranda is mentioned a second time with a warning from Naomi because he “loves to photobomb.” However, Lin-Manuel Miranda already appeared in the How I Met Your Mother universe, not as himself, but as a character named Gus. In How I Met Your Mother season 9, episode 11, “Bedtime Stories.” As Marshall (Jason Segal) is on a bus to Farhampton, he has to tell baby Marvin a series of rhyming stories to keep the child asleep.
