How I Met Your Father'sco-creators and director break down the finale's major HIMYM cameo. Since early January, Hulu has been delving into the world of HIMYM with a spinoff series that offers a gender-bent twist on the original's premise. How I Met Your Father follows hopeless romantic Sophie (Hilary Duff) as she searches for love in an era of casual hookups and dating apps. Meanwhile, in 2050, a future Sophie (Kim Cattrall) narrates her younger self's trials and tribulations as she tells her son how she came to meet his dad. How I Met Your Father also chronicles the ups and downs of Sophie's friend group, which includes her outgoing roommate Valentina (Francia Raisa) and potential love interest Jesse (Chris Lowell).
All throughout its first season, fans have waited to see if How I Met Your Father would plant any major connections to the flagship series. The premiere offered a major one in the form of Sid (Suraj Sharma) and Jesse's apartment, which is the same one that housed HIMYM characters Ted, Marshall, and Lily for 9 seasons. Last week's penultimate How I Met Your Father episode brought back two recurring HIMYM characters, the Captain (Kyle MacLachlan) and Becky (Laura Bell Bundy), but it turns out the creative team was keeping its biggest connection for the finale.
