How I Met Your Father features some big How I Met Your Mother cameos, and there were a few key ways that the creators kept them a secret. How I Met Your Mother ran for nine popular seasons before ultimately coming to a close in 2014. The show wrapped up the stories of Ted (Josh Radnor), Robin (Cobie Smulders), Barney (Neil Patrick Harris), Marshall (Jason Segal), and Lily (Alyson Hannigan), with the realization that Robin has been Ted's true love all along.

First premiering on Hulu earlier this year, How I Met Your Father operates under a similar premise – Sophie (Hilary Duff) recounts to her son how she met his father. The spinoff show hasn't received the same level of critical acclaim as the original series, but it does have plenty of Easter eggs and references for How I Met Your Mother fans to find. How I Met Your Father also features a handful of surprise cameos by characters from the original series, including The Captain (Kyle MacLachlan), Becky (Laura Bell Bundy), and, in the finale, Robin herself.

In the world of TV and movies, surprises are becoming harder and harder to keep secret, especially when some involved in the production are tuning in via live video feed from home. The creators of How I Met Your Father, Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, reveal to TV Line that there were a few methods they used to keep all of the cameos a secret.
