How I Met Your Father saved its first major How I Met Your Mother cameo for the season 1 finale, but the show was right in picking Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders), not Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris). Debuting eight years after HIMYM ended, the Hulu series serves as a spinoff with a new cast led by Hilary Duff's Sophie. Though How I Met Your Father presented a few connections to the original series in the debut season, the spinoff from Isaac Aptaker & Elizabeth Berger attempted to set itself apart from its predecessor. Granted, it paid tribute to the series that came before by featuring Robin in a key sequence.

That remained true until The Captain and his wife Becky appeared in How I Met Your Father season 1's penultimate episode, «Jay Street.» Though the soon-to-be-divorced couple was also seen in the season finale, which subsequently made details surrounding the «Pineapple Incident» canon, the spinoff's first major crossover character came in the form of Robin, who encountered Sophie in MacLaren's Pub.
