Tom Cruise reportedly makes more money from his movies than the studios backing them do. The actor got his start on the big screen in the early 1980s with breakthrough leading roles in the 1983 comedy Risky Business and would follow it up with his first action blockbuster, Top Gun, in 1986. Today, he is arguably the biggest action hero alive and one of the highest-grossing box office stars of all time, his films having amassed more than $10 billion worldwide. This is largely due to his role as IMF Agent Ethan Hunt in the long-running Mission: Impossible franchise, which began in 1996 and is now set to send Cruise off after two more installments.
Before that, Cruise will reprise his role as US Navy pilot Pete Mitchell, better known by his call sign Maverick, in Top Gun: Maverick, which is currently scheduled for a theatrical release on May 27. The film has experienced numerous delays, first to work out its complex flight sequences, and then later due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Still, theTop Gun sequel is expected to be a hit at the box office. Mission: Impossible 7 and 8 have experienced similar challenges during production, which have caused their release dates to be pushed back to 2023 and 2024, respectively. Despite the delays, Cruise is looking to ride the momentum of the last M:I installment, Fallout, which grossed a franchise-high $791 million, also a career high for Cruise.
