Several improvements are coming to WhatsApp, including the ability to emoji-react to someone’s messages, and a new “Communities” feature that promises to make it easier to manage group chats for large organizations, such as schools and businesses.
Users can already post emoji and GIFs in WhatsApp. But in a group chat, the emoji can create a flood of individual messages and notifications, which can become annoying.
To fix this, WhatsApp is adding emoji reactions similar to what Slack and Facebook already do. The Head of WhatsApp, Will Cathcart, posted a video of the feature in action. As you can see, it consolidates every individual emoji reaction under the user’s post itself, reducing the noise. The first slate of emoji reacts will include:
