Warner Bros. Discovery's plans for a DCEU revival seem promising, but they also risk repeating one of the franchise's worst trends. With the recent merger resulting in Warner Bros. Discovery, the new version of the company is looking to make changes in its approach to many of its existing IPs. In particular, Warner Bros. Discovery has hinted at a major planned overhaul of numerous DC properties.
The DCEU in particular has proven the most problematic of Warner Bros.'s many DC properties. Other DC shows and movies have fared much better, with the Arrowverse still pulling in a consistent viewership and films like The Batman receiving positive reviews. However, DC's most visible franchise, the DCEU, remains divisive among audiences and critics alike, with many disappointed in the franchise's approach to many of pop culture's most iconic heroes.

Though Warner Bros. Discovery's plans to revive the DCEU seem promising, they come with significant risk. Part of their plan is to focus on more films like Joker and The Batman—two of the most successful DC films of recent years—although that wouldn't actually address the biggest issues with the DCEU, and may cause a potential issue with the franchise not altogether different from its current problems. One of the most common criticisms of the DCEU is that its gritty tone doesn't match the nature of its heroes, and focusing on projects like Joker would only serve to highlight that issue.
