In recent months, Venom has obtained new powers, including one that draws on disgusting, real-world magic. Eddie Brock has ascended to the role of King in Black, leading to stunning revelations about not only the symbiotes, but their role in the Marvel Universe. In Spider-Man/Venom 2022 Free Comic Book Day Special readers are treated to perhaps the most shocking reveal yet—that there is a mystical element to Venom and it has basis in reality. In 2018, writer Donny Cates and artist Ryan Stegman revolutionized Venom, introducing the King in Black, the dark symbiote god; readers also met Dylan, Eddie Brock’s long-lost son. Eventually, the King in Black came to Earth, where Venom, along with Dylan and Earth’s heroes, united to defeat him. In the aftermath, Eddie ascended to the role of King in Black, and Dylan bonded with the Venom symbiote. A new creative team, headed by writers Ram V and Al Ewing and artist Bryan Hitch, have chronicled Dylan’s struggles with the symbiote, as well as his father’s quest to come to terms with what he has become; their lives have been complicated by the arrival of Meridus, a time-traveling King in Black, who is manipulating both Dylan and Eddie.

In the story “Seven Seals,” written by Ram V and Al Ewing, illustrated by Stefano Raffaele, colored by Alex Sinclair and lettered by Clayton Cowles, Eddie awakens to find himself in darkness.
