An upcoming indie game called Vampire Therapist will dive deep into the minds of struggling vampires, allowing players to help them solve their inner issues. Many successful AAA games are sequels to previous games or belong to a known series. At the 2023 Game Awards, five of the six nominees were sequels, and the other nomination was Super Mario Bros. Wonder, which is part of one of the most well-known video game series in the world. When new IPs are released, they mostly fit into the formulas that have already been done hundreds of times before.
Sometimes a completely different idea will arise, but it is oftentimes met with mixed reviews; Death Stranding's reviews were the perfect example. Indie games tend to be shorter and simpler, but it is certainly more common for them to be based on ideas that are completely outside the box. While these themes might not be for everyone, various gems rose in popularity due to their positively weird nature.
Little Bat Games is an independent studio based in Berlin, Germany, and it's currently working on its first game, and it seems that it will fit right into the positively weird category. Vampire Therapist allows gamers to play as Sam, formerly a cowboy and currently a vampire. According to the game's description, Sam hopes to find the «meaning of his immortality» by learning therapy techniques in order to help vampires deal with all sorts of mental health themes.
Vampire Therapist has a very particular sense of humor, but according to Little Bat Games, those who enjoy What We Do In the Shadows and other vampire comedies will feel right at home. The game will explore unsettling phobias and other potentially traumatic subjects. However, it will approach them with a humorous tone. While it might not be for everybody, there is certainly an audience out there for it.
