Troy Baker may have played Joel in The Last of Us games, but that doesn't mean he expected a significant role in the show. In fact, as revealed in a recent interview, he thought he'd be lucky to play a clicker.
This comes just after Baker's HBO The Last of Us debut, showing him in a role quite a bit more significant than a mindless infected. Instead, he plays a survivor and follower of David called James - a very different role than the one he's used to in this story.

Speaking to Deadline in an interview shared just after the latest episode aired, Baker revealed the process of getting involved with HBO's take on The Last of Us.
"Neil [Druckmann] was coy about this potential role," says Baker, explaining how it wasn't clear how he would be included in the show. "He was like, 'So, there’s a character that we have in mind for you, if you’re interested. If you don’t feel interested, it’s totally fine.' And I’m like, 'Dude, if there’s anything for me….' Look, I thought I was going to be a clicker. So, this is an upgrade."
Getting him in a role larger than your average cameo is in line with what the rest of the original cast was offered. Tommy's voice actor, Jeffrey Pierce, played a member of an anti-FEDRA uprising called Perry, appearing in two episodes. Then, in the next episode - the finale - we'll see Ellie's original actor Ashley Johnson. She'll actually be playing Ellie's mother, making the casting incredibly fitting - and possibly helping to explain one of the biggest mysteries surrounding Ellie since the game launched ten years ago.
It remains to be seen if Baker can be snuck into the next season too - although considering he has already played such a prominent role
