Simon Leviev, who is the subject of the documentary The Tinder Swindler, insists that the film is "made-up." The doc is the latest true crime hit for Netflix, which has had other big successes in that sphere over the years with the likes of the 2020 miniseries Tiger King, the 3-part 2019 doc Don’t F**k With Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer, and the 2015 series Making a Murderer. After The Tinder Swindler debuted on the streaming platform on February 2, 2022, buzz spread across the internet and the film is still #1 on Netflix's English language film chart, having been watched for over 60 million hours this week.
The Tinder Swindler follows Shimon Hayut, an Israeli man who operated on Tinder under the name Simon Leviev. He claimed to be the son of Lev Leviev, a diamond magnate and philanthropist whose net worth is over $1 billion. He would wine and dine women he met using expensive gifts and luxury jets acquired from other women, eventually faking a stabbing and requesting that the woman lend him money, which he would never pay back. Controversially, now that the doc has become a hit, Simon Leviev reportedly has plans to go to Hollywood and host a dating show.

Per EW, Simon Leviev will be telling his side of the story in an upcoming two-part Inside Edition interview. In the interview, he continues to claim that "they present it as a documentary but in truth, it's like a complete[ly] made-up movie." He insists that "I'm not a Tinder swindler. I was just a single guy that wanted to meet some girls on Tinder. I'm not this monster."
