Simon Leviev, the subject of Netflix's documentaryThe Tinder Swindler is being sued by the family of an Israel diamond magnate for using and exploiting their name as he scammed women. The documentary premiered on the streaming service on February 2 and quickly rose to the Top 10. It currently has a fresh rating of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics and audiences praising its compelling story and slick presentation. It follows the success of other true-crime Netflix hits like Making a Murderer andTiger King.
The Tinder Swindler tells the true story of how Leviev, whose real name is Shimon Hayut, used the titular dating app to trick several women into giving him huge sums of money. The 31-year-old Israeli native's modus operandi was to present himself as the son of a billionaire named Lev Leviev, owner of Israel's LLD Diamonds. He supported his fake claim by throwing lavish parties, traveling in private jets, and treating his girlfriends to expensive dinners. Soon, he would pretend that he was physically attacked by his supposed family's enemies and ask his victims for financial help. In the Netflix doc, only three of Hayut's victims from 2018-2019 spoke out to expose his scam but it is estimated that he has swindled more than $10 million from other people.
