Thor: Love And Thunder Has Big International Box Office Debut
Thor: Love and Thunder opens in theaters this Friday, July 8, and to little surprise, it's expected to have a very big opening weekend. The superhero movie is projected to bank as much as $300 million worldwide.
This includes between $140 million-$160 million in North America and a further $150 million from international markets, according to Deadline.
Love and Thunder arrived Wednesday, July 6, in a series of international box office markets such as Australia, Germany, Korea, and Italy. The movie made $15.7 million at its 17 international box office markets where the film opened on Wednesday. This is well ahead of the first showings for Thor: Ragnarok and Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness, Deadline reported.
For comparison, 2017's Thor: Ragnarok made $122.7 million in North America for its opening weekend. It went on to earn $315 million domestically and $539 million internationally for a global result of $854 million.
Love and Thunder is not expected to match the last big Marvel movie, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which made $187 million in North America for its opening weekend.
Taika Waititi returns to direct Love and Thunder, and in a push to help expand the movie's potential reach even more, it adds new cast members such as Natalie Portman as Jane Foster and Christian Bale as the villain, Gorr the God Butcher.
Love and Thunderisn't getting as strong reviews as Ragnarok, but it's aggregate review score on sites like Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes is higher than 2013's Thor: The Dark World, for what it's worth.
The new Thor film begins its North American rollout this Thursday, July 7, with previews at more than 4,300 theaters that begin at 3 PM local time. Keep checking back with GameSpot
