Thor: Love and Thunder ends with text card that reads, «Thor will be back.» As it turns out, writer-director Taika Waititi had no idea this would appear in the movie, and star Chris Hemsworth apparently did not either. Waititi recently spoke about this, as well as his future plans for the Thor series in a new interview.
Speaking to Insider, Waititi said of the end-credits text card teasing Thor's return, «Well, guess what? That was a surprise to me, too.» He added: «I'm not joking. I saw it in the theater and I was like, 'Oh, sh**. Really?' Even Chris [Hemsworth] was like, 'What?'»
Thor is the first MCU character to get four dedicated movies, and each has performed well at the box office, making it a natural expectation that the series will continue in some shape or form. «Of course he'll be back. He's the best character. I mean, I may be a little biased, but he's the most fun to watch,» Waititi said.
Despite the title card that said Thor will return, Waititi isn't a lock to come back to direct his third Thor movie. «I would definitely do one, but only if Chris did it. But it would need to be something surprising and unexpected for me to want to do it. Like what would be the new take?» he wondered.
Waititi said the Thor franchise's penchant for battles and fights is «fine,» but he personally wants to make something that feels «unexpected» in terms of the story. If he got to decide, Waititi would go very low-budget and make a peaceful road trip Thor movie.
«Like making just a $5 million movie with no fighting at all, just Thor on a road trip. Like Nebraska,» he said of the 2013 Oscar-nominated drama.
