We love Game Boy (and Game Boy-shaped) hardware mods around here, and this new project — a Game Boy “like no other” — is worth a look. Creator Obirux imagined what an original Game Boy with the GBA form factor might look like, and then got to work.
This video is a snappy overview of the “landscape” Game Boy prototype, which was created with two Game Boy shells, other original Nintendo parts, and a modified DMG IPS kit — so the overall design is spot-on, and the games themselves look sharp, too.
As iconic as the original Game Boy looks and feels — and even with lots of fond memories coloring my perspective to this day — I’m sure my hands would get along so much better with this GBA-style handheld. There’s a passionate market for custom handhelds, and I’ll be curious to see if anyone else follows suit (or if this creator decides to offer a mod kit).
Here’s a side-by-side shot with the original Game Boy and Obirux’s landscape design:
The design is a winning combo, but Obirux isn’t currently selling “landscape” kits. That said, the London-based modder does have a shop with lots of neat modified handhelds.
“The retro gaming community keeps me buzzing and I can’t thank them enough for pushing tech and design to new and exciting levels,” Obirux said on their website.
Whether it’s a slow or fast gaming news day, projects like this give me life.
