A hilarious new Pokémon fan animation makes light of some of the franchise’s more morally questionable game mechanics, namely how capturing Pokémon involves tracking Pokémon down and throwing balls at them. One of the core tenants of Nintendo’s long-running, monster-collecting Pokémon franchise is capturing Pokémon, training them, and pitting them against other each other in turn-based battles. These mechanics have been called into question repeatedly over the years for potentially concerning violence.
While this simple-yet-rich formula has helped Pokémon become a long-lasting global phenomenon since its debut in the late 1990s, many have questioned the merits of capturing cute little life-forms in small capsules and ordering them to fight one another for the amusement of the masses. The discussion surrounding Pokémon’s creature-catching mechanics has ranged from tongue-in-cheek jokes to serious condemnation from organizations like PETA, and some fans have taken the supposed animal cruelty even further with a shockingly brutal Pokémon FPS that was eventually taken down by Nintendo. Thankfully, Pokémon don’t seem to suffer when caught in the franchise’s signature Poké Balls, but that hasn’t stopped players from making light on how these sphere-shaped capsules are thrown at random creatures just going about their business.
