There have been fifteen entries in the mainline Final Fantasy series so far, stretching back to 1987 with the debut of Final Fantasy on the Nintendo Entertainment System. Over four different decades these games have captivated players around the world, and fans of Square Enix's RPG all have their personal favourites. But since there's been so many, some of the entries can be somewhat overlooked or underrated.
Our specialist writer Quinton O'Connor posted a poll on ResetEra asking voters to consider which is the most underrated mainline Final Fantasy in 2022. The forum's users did not disappoint, and a total of 678 people cast their vote.

Among the options for the most underrated mainline game in the series were Final Fantasies 5, 6, 8, 9, 12, 13, along with the option for 'Other: Please state in post'.
Final Fantasy 5 won out, taking 21.1 percent of the vote (143 votes), making the 1992 SNES entry the game considered the most underrated. It did enough to edge ahead of Final Fantasy 8 and 12, both of which achieved 18.4 percent of the vote, making the PS1 entry and PS2 entry, respectively, considered the second-most underrated entries. Third place was Final Fantasy 9 with 17.4 percent. Fourth place went to Final Fantasy 13 with 14.5 percent. Coming in last was Final Fantasy 6 with only 3.8 percent of the vote, behind 'Other' which got 6.3 percent of the vote.
