She-Hulk: Attorney At Law Team Talks Evolution Of Fourth-Wall Breaking
In less than a week, the latest superhero to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe arrives on Disney Plus with She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. Tatiana Maslany's Jennifer Walters, a.k.a She-Hulk, is seen breaking the fourth wall, or looking towards the camera and talking to the audience. The series creators have explained the evolution of the process, and how it seemed like a necessity when writing the script.
As part of a specific run in the comics, She-Hulk would be seen breaking the fourth wall. It was a characteristic that the show’s head writer Jessica Gao was not ready to let go of. When bringing the adaptation to life, the fourth wall was key for the creators, and the way it was brought to life went through a “lot of evolutionary steps.” A lot of ideas were brought to the table, but the final product is what everybody seemed to agree on.

During a recent virtual press conference for She-Hulk, Gao revealed that the creative team was even thinking of including “editor’s notes” in the form of text boxes on the screen and having Jennifer interact with them. Doesn’t seem like the idea made the cut, but she will definitely be seen interacting with audience members. For Gao, this was “the most important element to retain,” along with the humor, which is visible in the latest She-Hulk scene and the titular character's personality. “Because it was the John Byrne run that made me fall in love with this character, you know? It was just so lighthearted and fun and refreshing. So that was always kind of a foundational element,” she said.
