Over the years, Transformers has introduced some questionable robots but there’s one kind of bot that will never be used on-screen alongside the Autobots and Decepticons. Beginning in the late 80s, McDonald’s released three sets of “Changeables” which transformed from robot form into fast food items like burgers and fries. While this was a fun take on the transforming robot trend, it is very unlikely that Changeables would be added to the story of Transformers 7 or any future projects for the franchise.
The McDonald’s toys were not made in partnership with Hasbro, the toy company that produced the Transformers along with Japanese company Takara Tomy. Also known as McRobots, the toys were independently created for the McDonald’s Happy Meal series and were made of a heavy plastic. The three separate series were released in 1987, ‘89 and ‘90, at the height of the Transformers toy craze. With three moving parts, the toys transformed from robots and dinosaurs into specific McDonald’s foods including the Egg McMuffin and Big Mac.

Transformers have remained popular since their introduction in the 80s, but McDonald’s was likely trying to cash in on the early craze with their Changeables series. Although a Changeable was featured in McDonald’s 40th anniversary Happy Meal pack in 2019, these toys have never been translated onscreen. However, there are several reasons why even Michael Bay wouldn’t make the mistake of using these robots Transformers movie. The most obvious of these is that robots that transform into food would serve no narrative purpose.
