The Super Mario Bros. Movie has now cleared $500 million worldwide at the box office to become the highest-grossing video game movie of all time. It surpassed Warcraft ($439 million) to set the record.
It's now the highest-grossing movie of 2023 in the US and globally, surpassing Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania ($474 million).
The Super Mario Bros. Movie debuted on April 5 and had a very strong first weekend, setting the record for not only the best start for a video game movie, but also the best opening weekend for any animated film of all time. Disney's Frozen II was the previous record-holder.
According to Variety, The Super Mario Bros. Movie had a production budget of $100 million, which the site said was «economical» for an animated film of this scale.
The film ends with a teaser for a potential sequel, and that would be no surprise given Nintendo has spoken openly about its plans to make additional movies.
