The Sonic Community Has Forgiven Princess Elise
If you were to ask a Sonic fan who their least favourite character is, many would say Princess Elise. Sadly, it's easy to see why. Even if you ignore the fact that the game she stars in, Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) is terrible, she's also awfully written. She has very little agency and spends most of the game waiting for Sonic to save her from Eggman. For that reason, Sega rarely acknowledged her existence after Sonic '06.
That is, until now. Out of the blue, an official Elise redesign was shared last week, showing us what she'd look like if drawn more in the style of the other characters in the series. And it turns out that the art is so cute, it's enough for fans to reexamine their thoughts on the character. Now, rather than remembering her as a useless damsel in distress, fans want to see more of Elise, hoping that she is reintroduced into the series.

Across the Sonic fanbase, love is pouring out over Princess Elise's - now technically Queen Elise's - new look, as well as the touching short story Sonic Team shared alongside her artwork. While currently only available in Japanese, it tells us how she's now taken up ice skating, and calls upon Silver the Hedgehog to help her practice her routine to a song that reminds her of her late parents.
The combination of an adorable redesign and backstory is enough for many to look past Elise's less-than-stellar introduction to the series, and hope it sees her in more Sonic media. True enough, her new look would help her fit into the Sonic world nicely, nowhere near as jarring as she was in 2006.
