The Punisher: New Details for Jon Bernthal MCU Special Emerge, Director Announced
New details have emerged for the Marvel Studios Special Presentation featuring Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle/.
It was announced on Monday, February 24, 2025, that Bernthal’s Punisher character will headline a Marvel Studios Special Presentation set within the MCU. Thus far, the studio has released two of these specials: Werewolf by Night and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, both of which arrived on Disney+ in 2022.
Per Entertainment Weekly, the Punisher special will be directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, who is also writing the script with Bernthal. The two of them previously worked together on We Own This City, an HBO miniseries that premiered in 2022.
“It’s like a shotgun blast of a story, but also has all the pathos and emotion that you want out of a Frank Castle story,” said Marvel’s Brad Winderbaum. “It’s so exciting.”
Winderbaum also said, “Bernthal is a generational actor. He’s incredible what he brings to all the roles he plays, but particularly Frank Castle. And he’s a great writer. He knows the character inside and out…Also, I love Punisher, but I love Jon’s Punisher in particular. The idea that he’s in the MCU and can bring that to the greater universe, especially the more grounded street-level stuff, is a huge opportunity and, as a fan, the greatest thing ever.”
Bernthal will first be seen reprising his MCU role in Daredevil: Born Again, which premieres on Disney+ on March 4, 2024. That show also stars Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock, Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, Elden Henson as Franklin “Foggy” Nelson, and more.
Prior to Daredevil: Born Again, Bernthal starred in the second season of the Netflix Daredevil series before he went on to lead two seasons of his own Netflix show, titled The Punisher.
A release date for The Punisher MCU special has not yet been announced.
