The MCU’s next big bad – Thor: Love and Thunder’s Gorr the God Butcher – can explain a major mystery that’s been around since Phase 2. The worldbuilding in Guardians of the Galaxy established the concept of the Celestials, but also raised some important questions about these characters that have never been answered. Thor 4 could become the latest MCU movie to incorporate these magnificent, all-powerful entities.
Based on what’s known about Thor’s next big-screen adventure, Thor: Love and Thunder is poised to explore some old and new MCU gods. In addition to its returning Asgardian characters, Thor 4 is bringing in Russell Crowe’s Zeus, the leader of the Greek pantheon of gods and the father of Hercules. More could be shown as well, which would make sense when taking into consideration who the movie’s villain is. Following battles with Hela and Thanos, Thor and his allies will be up against Christian Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher. In the comic books, Gorr is an alien who traverses the galaxy on a hate-driven killing spree against the gods of all pantheons. Gods like Zeus – and Thor – are sure to become targets of Bale’s character in the MCU interpretation of the story.

It's through Gorr that Marvel can explain its Celestial mystery from Phase 2. When the Collector was giving Star-Lord’s team a brief overview of the Celestials in Guardians of the Galaxy, there was a sense that these cosmic beings are a part of the MCU’s history, and therefore no longer a concern for its present-day characters.
