There are five skills in Stardew Valley: Farming, Foraging, Mining, Fishing, and Combat. These skills will increase in level with various tasks to a maximum of level 10. At levels 5 and 10, you get to choose a profession, which is a slight bonus in each of the skills.

But, when given the choice, it can be a difficult one. Of course, every profession is useful, but some are arguably better than others in general. Read on to see which profession is the better one for the average player, as well as how to use the Statue of Uncertainty to change professions.

At Farming Level 5, you will be given two choices: Rancher or Tiller.
In most cases, Tiller will be the superior option. There are two reasons for this. First, animal products should be crafted into artisan goods, not sold raw. Second, choosing the Tiller profession will unlock the Artisan profession at Level 10, which is far superior to the two options given at Level 10 if you choose Rancher.
If you choose Tiller at Level 5, you'll be given a choice between Artisan and Agriculturist at Level 10.
If you chose Tiller, as recommended earlier, the far superior choice is Artisan. Given that artisan goods are some of the most profitable items in the game, it's much better than the crop growth speed increase given by Agriculturist.
